The Bible

The feast of Candlemas  – 40 days after Christmas and marking the end of the Christmas season – falls on 2nd February. It marks the presentation of the baby Jesus at the Temple by Mary and Joseph, 40 days after his birth, as was customary for baby boys.

The candle in Candlemas comes from Simeon’s greeting of the baby as “a light for revelation to the gentiles and the glory of your people Israel”, and looks forward to Jesus’ own description of himself as “the light of the world”. No doubt a festival involving light was also cheeringly welcome to congregations down the centuries as winter dragged on!

At St Mary’s, the congregation celebrated Candlemas on Sunday, 29th January. This meant great fun for our Kidz Prayz group of school-age youngsters, who marked the occasion by creating paintings of gold and  silver candles, with copious additions of “bling” in the form of glitter glue.

As they worked busily together, without so much as a tussle over felt pens, it was lovely to see the children, our own “little lights”,  growing and learning as part of the church family.

And it’s lovely to see more families joining us at St Mary’s. The Kidz Prayz helpers are always happy to welcome new youngsters, and there is also a crèche for the under-fives.
